Smoke from wildfires causing poor air quality in parts of the NorthwestMon, 01 Oct 2012 07:17:23 EDT
Due to recent wildfires, the air quality is unhealthy in several areas along the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains, especially
in the Trout Lake and Ellensburg areas. At times, smoke will also impact areas in and around the Columbia basin. The Washington State Department of Ecology has issued an air quality alert, which is in effect until noon PDT Monday. Details...

In the East, a ridge of high pressure will limit vertical mixing in the atmosphere and produce mostly sunny skies and above-normal surface temperatures, enhancing ground-level ozone formation. In addition, southwesterly winds ahead of an approaching cold front will bring moisture and pollutants into the region, aiding particle formation. These conditions will lead to widespread Moderate AQI levels across the East, with portions of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Vermont reaching Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups AQI levels. In the West, generally light winds in California will limit pollutant dispersion, and mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures will enhance ozone formation.
